A recent marketing email from Marks & Spencer highlighted that the UK produces 15 million tonnes of food waste every year!
And what makes up most of that waste? Yip, you've guessed it, bread! The food waste from my customers seems to confirm this. I often shred 40L of bread a week, this week that equated to 10 Kg!
Because I use an in-vessel composter I can add it to the compost without fear of attracting rodents. I shred it to help it break down quicker and to absorb liquids that form as the food waste decomposes.
I'm not sure what it adds in terms of nutrients but as wheat contains calcium, phosphorous, potassium, iron, magnesium and sodium I don't think it's going to hurt.
But, the best thing to do is not produce the waste in the first place. As a first world country we extravagantly toast FRESH bread! A gastronomic sin in France!
Back in the day we toasted bread because it was going stale and it was a good way of continuing to use the bread. Now bread is so cheap using up the left overs is no longer a concern. But just because we can doesn't mean we should.
